What is the process for a business to become Fair Trade endorsed ?
To make your business Fair Trade endorsed under the Fair Traders of Australia (FToA) program, here is a simplified explanation of the steps:
please note: You will be mentored and guided through every step of the process.
Step 1. Meet the Fair Trade Standard:
Businesses must become members of the association and adhere to the WFTO 10 Principles of Fair Trade, ensuring their commitment to supporting marginalized producers.
Step 2. Assessment Process:
- Stage 1: Complete an initial form with basic details about turnover and suitability for Fair Trade. This includes committing to the process.
- Stage 2: Provide a detailed self-assessment based on the 10 Fair Trade Principles. Peer references from members and producer partners will be required. Sometimes, producer partners must also complete self-assessments ( documenting how they meet the 10 principles).
Step 3 Qualification Requirements:
- At least 60% of purchases must come from Fair Trade verified sources (e.g., FLO, WFTO ). This needs to increase to 70% within four years.
- Evidence of Fair Trade as a core business mission is essential.
Step 4: Addressing Weaknesses:
If areas for improvement are found, businesses must set goals to address them.
Step 5: Endorsement and Branding:
Once approved, businesses receive an endorsement logo to display on websites, promotional materials, and stationery. This logo is not for product packaging, but for promoting the organization’s commitment to Fair Trade.
This process helps consumers identify Australian-based businesses practicing Fair Trade practices, while also commited to promoting the growth of Fair Trade networks and advocacy within Australia.
